Virgin Money to start retail banking services in South Africa

Virgin Money already offers life insurance products in partnership with 1Life Insurance, credit card with ABSA and short-term insurance in collaboration with Dial Direct. Virgin Money launched its credit card in 2006, and now it has a customer base of over 100,000 in South Africa, with more than $1 billion in credit to date.

The company made successful forays into the banking sector following the acquisition of British banks Church House Trust in 2010 and Northern Rock in 2012. Telesure, the parent company of Dial Direct, Auto & General and 1Life Insurance, is assured that their short-term insurance business in partnership with Virgin Money is likely to have 15% percent market share in South Africa in the coming days. Meanwhile, Virgin Money is planning to introduce insurance products specifically designed for small and medium ventures. The company is also building Virgin Active’s Classic health club at a cost of R150 million in Sandton. The health club will be operational from August.

FNB smartphone banking app: The move by the FNB is widely viewed as a strategic marketing initiative that will attract “non-FNB customers through unique features available on the FNB app, which already has more than 400 000 active users.”

Non-FNB customers can now make geo payments and enjoy wider contactless payment facilities through the bank’s eWallet application by downloading the FNB smartphone banking application. FNB e-wallet offers all the convenience of carrying a real wallet. It allows FNB customers to purchase prepaid electricity and mobile recharge, withdraw money, and make payments without having to log in to the bank website. Non-FNB customers can enjoy all these facilities except withdrawals and make selected bill payments through the FNB smartphone banking application. They need to link any SA bank account they have.
